Whether you want to pulverize pepper, or exotic spice blends – this 5kg colossus made of high-quality, coarse-textured granite makes grinding effortless. And not just that: the mortar is perfect for creating delicious pesto, flavorful salsa, or other fresh pastes. Its massive design ensures a stable grinding experience, even with intensive use.

We’re such fans of this mortar that the entire Gipfelhirsch team uses it at home – and it’s an indispensable helper in every Spice Lab workshop.

If you’re wondering what kind of cooking calls for a mortar, we can easily say: just about everything. Every culture uses some form of grinding or crushing. Whether it’s a Mexican molcajete or a Chinese millstone, the XL Mortar is a fantastic all-rounder, and more than just a heavy spice mill.

  • Usage
Before First Use: For initial cleaning, thoroughly grind coarse salt or a handful of rice – this removes any potential production residues. Repeat if necessary. Usage: Place the mortar on a non-slip, stable surface to prevent movement. Fill the mortar no more than halfway for consistent grinding results. Hold the pestle securely and apply steady, even pressure to avoid injuries. Cleaning: Rinse the mortar and pestle with warm water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh detergents to protect the granite surface and prevent absorption. Dry both parts thoroughly and let the mortar sit for a while to ensure it fully dries out.
